Policy Brief on Mainstreaming Natural Resources Safeguards into Environmental Legislations and National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan
This project, implemented by the Good Governance Protection Forum (GGPF) in collaboration with WWF Nepal and supported by USAID, focuses on integrating natural resources safeguards into Nepal's environmental legislations and the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP).
Through a series of four workshops, held in August 2024 with key stakeholders including the Federal Parliament, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, and the Ministry of Forests and Environment, the project aimed to address the impact of linear infrastructure projects—such as roads, railways, and power lines—on biodiversity and wildlife corridors.
The discussions highlighted the importance of amending the Environmental Protection Regulation (EPR) and adopting mitigation measures like overpasses, underpasses, and wildlife-friendly infrastructure to reduce casualties and protect wildlife. The workshops provided valuable input for policy amendments and raised awareness among parliamentarians and other stakeholders about safeguarding biodiversity in the context of infrastructure development. This initiative is crucial in shaping future infrastructure policies to ensure sustainable development while conserving Nepal's natural heritage.
